Email marketing is one of the most effective marketing tools available today. A successful campaign has the potential to generate higher open rates, obtain a greater response, and ultimately create more revenue. Here are five tips to help send you on your way to a beautifully crafted campaign.

Subject Line is Key

I am sure you all have heard of the saying, “Don’t judge a book by the cover”. Unfortunately, there is a reason for the saying – because everyone does it anyway. First impression is key in any form of communication. When people receive an Email the first thing they see is the subject line. A subject line has the potential to either gain or lose the interest of a reader. A subject line should include your brand name along with a reference from the Email.

Example of a bad subject line: hey I thought you want to see this or ACT TODAY OR YOU WILL REGRET IT!!!!

Example of a good subject line: [Swiftpage] How to attract the right client or [Acme Garage] Summer is a terrible time to get stranded on the road

Pay attention to the From Section in your Emails

To help understand how important this one is, think about your own inbox. Would you be more likely to open an Email sent from advertising@xyzcorp.com or Sara.Jantsch@swiftpage.com? People don’t want to feel like they are receiving an automated Email. If readers don’t feel like you put the time into personalizing the Email, they will not want to take the time to pay attention to what you have to say.

Variety

Sending an Email can be one of the most effective ways to grab readers’ attention. However, if you abuse the power that Email marketing can provide you, then readers will stop showing interest in your Emails. Consistency is essential with any marketing campaign; however, variety is just as important. Create a Drip Marketing Campaign that not only includes Emails, but call lists, and also direct mail. People will appreciate the variety of ways you attempted to gain their attention and they will also appreciate the fact that you aren’t completely flooding their inboxes.

Quality over Quantity

Whose tweets do you pay attention to on Twitter? When people post tweets all day long trying to sell themselves I can almost guarantee that most of their followers do not enjoy reading their tweets. However, when people link to valuable information or post content rich tweets, people are much more likely to pay attention to and even RT what they have to say. This relates directly to Email marketing. Send out content rich Emails and gain the trust of your readers. Who knows – maybe they will even “ReTweet” your Email by forwarding it to a friend.

Test Everything before Sending

Test the way your Email looks, not only in your own Email service provider, but in several Email providers. Test all your links in the top, middle, and bottom of your message to make sure they all work. Test your graphics. Pictures are a great way to grab someone’s attention, the only problem is, pictures do not always show up in Email messages. Test the effectiveness of your Email by covering the pictures and making sure your message is still straight forward and easy to understand. Finally, test your Email with a spam check tool before you send. Spam checks will see flags in your Email that may tip off spam filters.
