Top 5 Ways to Build Your Email List

fiveIn preparation for writing this blog post, I did a little research to see what other people thought about building an Email list. I found a website that offered a free whitepaper which included several List Building Techniques. I clicked on the link and was asked to fill out my Email address and contact information. Tricky, tricky. Not only was the company providing information on list building, they were taking their own advice and developing a list of their own. This brings me to my number one list building tip:

Offer Incentives

Whitepapers are an excellent way to build your Email list. I was very interested in the free whitepaper on list building techniques. I did not mind filling out my Email address simply to receive the whitepaper. I figured, if I was interested in the information that the company was currently providing, I may be interested in the future as well. If you offer a whitepaper in exchange for an Email address, make sure the whitepaper is content rich and worth providing personal information for. The whitepaper may be the first thing a reader is introduced to in relation to your company and if they do not have a great first experience with your company, they may not be interested in your future offers.

The Easier, The Better

Make signing up for your Email List as easy as possible. First of all, make sure it is not difficult for people to find where to sign up. Post a link on every page of your company website for people to subscribe to your Email List. Second of all, once someone clicks on your link – do not require a ton of unnecessary information. All you really need is an Email address and name at this point. People will be more likely to provide you with these two pieces of information than they will be to fill out a form including their address and telephone number as well.

Use Your Current Contacts

Always make sure to include the option to “Forward to a Friend” at the bottom of your Emails. If you produce content rich information, people will be more likely to forward the information on to friends and colleagues. The people receiving the information will be receiving it from someone they know and trust and they will be more likely to look into what you have to offer. By forwarding an Email, the reader is saying, “This is great information from a company I trust.”

Business Cards

You pass your business card out in many different situations. You pass your card out at trade shows and networking events, at seminars, at business meetings, to sign up for free lunches, or to a stranger you pass along the way who is interested in what you have to offer. On your card, you should always promote your website. On the back of your card, include information on how to receive information via Emails or Newsletters.

Use Direct Mail

If you already have a large direct mailing list, take advantage of this list. On every piece of direct mail you receive, offer information on signing up for your Email List. This way, you are marketing directly to people you know are already interested in your product. To provide them with a reason to actually go to a computer and sign up for your Email List, offer them some form of an incentive. Offer a whitepaper, a discount, promote a special online offer, grant access to exclusive company specials, etc. It is a fact that people love gifts, they are extremely hard to turn down and therefore gifts are a great tool to use to gain information.

Bonus Tip: Make it worthwhile for your readers

It is a rule of thumb in Email marketing to always make it easy for your customers to opt out of the newsletters and Email updates that you send them. However, if you make it worthwhile to stay subscribed they will continue to follow you over the years and will develop a loyalty to your company.
