A lesson in Finance

Intern Position: Sales Associate

Amber Fehr presented to our group on Finance. She invented a small business (C. George was selling key chains on the beach in California) and provided us with material on his different decisions that he made with his company’s earnings.

3 things I learned during his presentation:

  •  Never overestimate your revenue. As a group we looked a spreadsheet that included C. Georges revenues and expenses for two years. The second year, George acquired greater expenses then revenues, putting him deep in debt. A major problem for C. George’s key chain company!
  • Don’t have more accounts payable than you have accounts receivable.
  • Make sure the person you hire brings in more revenue than expenses. In the example Amber provided us, George hired someone for sales, but he wasn’t making any, so he ended up costing more for the company just by having him there.

2 random thoughts I had in the presentation:

  • If you want a job in finance you definitely need to be more organized and more focused on detail than anyone else in the company.
  • Managing all of the finances for a company takes extreme concentration and dedication to make sure everything is in order and going in the right direction!

#1 takeaway from my experience at Swiftpage so far:

  • It is so important to enjoy where you work and who you work with, because when you do everything seems to happen a lot smoother!
