A lesson in Human Resources

Name: Aaron Binke

School: Colorado University at Boulder

Intern Position: Sales Associate

Lanae Fehr, Director of Human Resources, first shared her expertise and perspectives on HR. She described part of her job as building a sense of community within the company, so we each completed an obstacle course relying solely on communication (we were blindfolded). We then finished the meeting with quite an adventurous game of Volleyball.

3 “Things” I Learned

  • I learned that team building is an important part of being an HR Director. In order to have a cohesive work environment all the employees need to get along and be able to communicate.
  • I also learned that some people in the office are not to be trusted (namely John).  He directed a blindfolded Tom into a garbage can on purpose…. But honestly, I learned it is important to create a fun working environment where people can joke around with each other, and feel comfortable with their fellow employees.
  •  The final thing I learned is the importance of using key words in the job description within your resume.  Also in regards to the resume,  I learned to not include an 8×11 glossy picture of yourself attached to your resume no matter how attractive you are.

2 Random Thoughts

  • Only make bets that you know you are going to win; especially when it involves having to swim in a disgusting lake to retrieve a volleyball.
  • Volleyball is one of the best ways to build camaraderie within an office

1 Thing I took away from Swiftpage

  • I learned how to adapt a sales pitch to differing people (people having a bad day, someone who seems uninterested, a person who is extremely interested, etc.).  You have to make the deals.

You can see pictures from this event (John directing Tom into a garbage can during the obstacle course, losing the Volleyball, etc.) by simply clicking here!

My favorite song to listen to while I am not making calls (which I am always diligently doing) is Cochise by Audioslave.

Summer is here, and you know what that means… Interns!!  Swiftpage is lucky enough to have 10 awesome interns onboard helping with everything from Sales and Marketing to Product Testing and Support.  As part of the program, they have the opportunity to hear a brief presentation from a department head each week on one specific aspect of the business.  We have asked them to share some of their acquired knowledge from these “enlightening” sessions with you here, in the “Summer Intern Series”.
