A Lesson in Business Development

Name: Tom Robinson

School: San Diego

Intern Position: Sales Associate

Mike Ogdon (the VP of sales) presented to our group on sales. As a group we looked at a specific company (Swiftpage) and the different opportunities that the complimentary businesses/industries would offer. We then, piece by piece, narrowed down what company would be most beneficial to partner with, and how to network within that company.

Three things I learned from the presentation:

  • I learned about the unique expansion strategy of Swiftpage. There are so many different types of businesses out there, not to mention strategies in which to expand a business, it was very interesting to see how a company like Swiftpage would approach growing in such a diverse marketplace.
  • I learned about how important increasing company contacts are for business growth. You can never network enough. It is impossible to foresee how or who will be able to help get your foot in the door.
  • I learned about how dedicated people are truly the key to any business development.

Two random thoughts I had during Mike’s presentation:

  • A lot depends on the sociability of executives in business development. This relates back to how important it is to never stop networking, you have to be social and assertive when it comes to making new contacts.
  • Swiftpage really does rock.

One thing I have taken away from Swiftpage so far:

  • Learning how to convince people to sign up for something that will truly revolutionize their business. Obviously tricking someone into doing something will never be beneficial long-term, just like they say, the quickest way to lose a client is good advertising with a false product. However, if you have a product/company that you truly believe in, and you are able to demonstrate why they should also share this feeling, it can be truly revolutionary.

Summer is here, and you know what that means… Interns!!  Swiftpage is lucky enough to have 10 awesome interns onboard helping with everything from Sales and Marketing to Product Testing and Support.  As part of the program, they have the opportunity to hear a brief presentation from a department head each week on one specific aspect of the business.  We have asked them to share some of their acquired knowledge from these “enlightening” sessions with you here, in the “Summer Intern Series”.
