A Lesson in Marketing

Name: Dave Lenio

School: Madison Area Technical College

Intern Position: Marketing and Design

Dan Ogdon demonstrated the various avenues that can be used for marketing. There are truly so many different ways marketing can be effectively utilized in a small business, especially when equipped with the right tools.

3 things learned during presentation:

  • Sponsored links run on a bidding war system, so there can be a lot of marketing “gamesmanship” in regards to impacting a competitor’s advertising costs.
  • Nothing online is random. Everything has been placed, bought, or suggested for a reason.
  • When purchasing goods online, it is wise to look for a coupon or affiliate offer.

2 Random thoughts during presentation

  • Online advertising is far more complex than I ever imagined, but is still probably cheaper than other mediums since your feedback and data is gathered automatically and as close to instant as possible.
  • Man, I hate Excel…but it sure can do a lot when you know how to use it.

1 Takeaway from Swiftpage so far:

  • There is always a new avenue to pursue in marketing, and staying fresh helps to keep people interested. Also, going back to school for Graphic Design was the right move for me because I love what I’m doing!

My favorite song to listen to while I am designing is Christina Aguilera, Aint No Other Man

Summer is here, and you know what that means… Interns!!  Swiftpage is lucky enough to have 10 awesome interns onboard helping with everything from Sales and Marketing to Product Testing and Support.  As part of the program, they have the opportunity to hear a brief presentation from a department head each week on one specific aspect of the business.  We have asked them to share some of their acquired knowledge from these “enlightening” sessions with you here, in the “Summer Intern Series”.
