South by Southwest (SXSW) Debrief: It was wild!

Last week several of our team members attended the SXSW conference in Austin. I asked our Vice President of Marketing, Dan Ogdon, to give me a synopsis of the good, the bad, and the cool. Here is what he had to say:

Ambient location was a hot topic – companies like Forecast, Highlight and Banjo were heavily covered and we got to watch the Banjo CEO pitch at the SXSW Accelerator.  The idea is that your physical location is known at all times – if you are in the Denver airport and your friend is in the Denver airport, but you didn’t know it and you checked in on Facebook and she checked in on Foursquare, these services would alert you if you are friends on these social platforms.  Sure to be a fun space to watch.

There were some great talks, one specifically from the CEO of Living Social and Steve Case, of Revolution, formerly the CEO of AOL on how Living Social grew so big and what they plan to do to handle the growth and provide a true local commerce platform.  They went so far as to say Living Social is testing physical spaces where merchants could hold seminars about what they do.

Our favorite part of the week was definitely the Accelerator – companies in categories from entertainment apps, social media platforms, interactive web design, mobile, health, news related technologies and music technologies.  They each received 2 minutes to pitch their companies and were then grilled for 10 minutes by a moderator, a panel of judges, and the audience.  The Accelerator sessions we attended were on social media technologies and interactive web platforms.  The panels included the CEO of Razorfish, CTO of Zappos, Co-founder of Facebook, CEO of Etsy and more.  Great to watch the pitches and awesome to hear the panelists reactions.  Lots of energy – our favorites were Thirst Labs for social media technologies and Viztu Technologies for interactive web platforms.

SXSW was wild and we can’t wait to see what they bring to the table in 2013. We will be back!

Were you at SXSW? What was your favorite part?
