We love email…and we love sharing our passion with you. During the month of February aka the “month of love”, we will be featuring one email a day with tips, commentary and more from industry experts.
Day 12: TRAVEL+LEISURE Inspires Us to Use Borders, Vertical Lines, and Background Colors to Separate Content
Subject Line: Galapagos Islands: Your Daily Travel Eye Candy; Most Romantic Restaurants
Industry: Travel, Print Magazine
Type of Email: News, Weekly Update
This email does an excellent job separating content with series of horizontal and vertical lines as well as nested table borders and colors. It is important add these design elements to your emails to prioritize your content and guide your readers’ attention. Without proper separation, readers quickly lose interest since they cannot easily read your email.
Make Your Email Pop Add a background color or border to your email template to contrast the images and body content and negative white space. The contrast will also offer a nice separation for pre-headers and footers.
Variety This email uses thick and thin borders as well as dotted in several colors. Use several types of borders/lines to keep your designs fresh, yet consistent. Maybe use dotter lines to separate your newsletter articles and color your sidebar a light branded color? Add thicker lines to add more emphasis or use thinner weighted lines to offer subtle aesthetics.
Restraint You don’t have to make every section a color, or add a border either. Use design elements to supplement your content and images, not hinder them. I think we all have received poorly designed emails from business owners that strain your eyes by glancing at them (bold red letters on a plain blue background in all caps). Look at what is working in other emails you receive and add those elements to your own emails.
