We have all read or heard many of the brilliant quotes from Dr. Seuss (Theodor Seuss Geisel). He painted a picture with his words in a way that left the message up to the creative minds of each individual to interpret them. While many of his quotes are inspirational to life in general, I’ll do my best to relate some of them to the business world.
“I have heard there are troubles of more than one kind.
Some come from ahead and some come from behind.
But I’ve bought a big bat. I’m all ready you see.
Now my troubles are going to have troubles with me!”
So you have started a business. Obviously there are going to be many troubles along the road to success. You will have businesses that have gone ahead of you and are putting pressure on you to deliver a valuable product to your customers. At the same time you will have new businesses entering the market attempting to bring something new and better to the table. However, if you can develop a valuable product (the big bat) that delivers a unique benefit to your customers that your competition cannot, deploy a customer centric business model, and continuously improve, they are going to find themselves having troubles with you.
“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.”
Stay up to date on the latest news in your specific industry. As you continue to build your expertise in your industry the more opportunities for success while arise. These opportunities may come in the form of new business projects, entering new marketing niches or acquiring new prospective customers. Business markets are always changing. Knowing how and when they are changing will keep you a step ahead leading you to more and more places.
“And will you succeed? Yes indeed, yes indeed!
Ninety-eight and three-quarters percent guaranteed!”
You are going to succeed in your business endeavors and sometimes fail. I think this is the point Dr. Seuss is trying to make here. Once you have gained success with your business it is important to look back at the times or events when you were unsuccessful. Some of the best learning moments come from failure. Use them to better yourself and your business down the road.
“When beetles fight these battles in a bottle with their paddles
and the bottle’s on a poodle and the poodle’s eating noodles…
…they call this a muddle puddle tweetle poodle beetle noodle
bottle paddle battle.”
In the business world you will be faced with many complicated problems and decisions. Just do your best to simplify them. Dr. Seuss also says: “Sometimes the questions are complicated and the answers are simple.” We tend to over analyze situations when there is an easier answer somewhere to be found. Occam’s razor is a scientific and philosophic rule sometimes used in problem solving that says the simplest of answers may sometimes be preferred over the more complex ones.
