Marketing Moment: Use April Fool’s Day to Bring Some Buzz

Happy April Fool’s Day! Today is a fun holiday for staplers in jello, faux letters of resignation and posting out of order signs on restroom doors. I grew up with a prankster dad who always pulled a fast one on us on April 1st and we loved it as kids. As an adult I still appreciate pranks from friends, family and businesses.

Today, Google launched Gmail Blue. When you first start to watch the video, the speakers get you really excited for the future of email, then they show you Gmail Blue. What it is? Gmail, but colored blue… blue text, blue buttons, etc. I wonder how many takes they had to do to get all of the giggles out of the Google designers when they started explaining what Gmail Blue actually is.

Clearly none of us have a Google sized budget or that much time on our hands, but we can still use today’s holiday to create some buzz for our businesses. Pretend to rename your business, announce your retirement, drastically ‘change’ a beloved logo, ‘stop’ carrying a favorite product or give a discount for every customer who can prank you. Make sure to keep your prank lighthearted and set a plan to follow up with customers later today or tomorrow to reveal your prank.
